What began as a routine overnight journey turned into a terrifying fight for survival when a private sleeper bus caught fire in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district, leaving passengers shaken, injured, and thankful to be alive.
Late on Tuesday night, a non-AC private sleeper bus traveling from Hosanagara to Bengaluru suddenly burst into flames near the Arasalu–Suduru stretch in Hosanagara taluk. The bus, carrying around 35 to 36 passengers, was moving through a relatively quiet forested road when panic broke out inside the vehicle.
According to passengers, the first sign of trouble was a strong burning smell and thick smoke emerging from the driver’s cabin. Within moments, the smoke began filling the bus, making it difficult to breathe or even see clearly. Many passengers were asleep at the time, jolted awake by shouting, coughing, and the driver’s frantic attempts to stop the bus.
The driver reacted quickly, slowing the vehicle and pulling it to the side of the road. But by then, flames had already begun spreading. As the bus came to a halt, it reportedly brushed against a roadside tree, which may have worsened the situation, allowing the fire to spread faster.
What followed were chaotic and terrifying scenes. Passengers screamed for help, struggling to grab their belongings while trying to escape. Some broke open windows, others jumped down from emergency exits, and a few were helped out by fellow travelers. In the darkness of the night, with flames lighting up the road, people ran in different directions, fearing the bus might explode.
Several passengers suffered burn injuries, smoke inhalation, and fractures while escaping. The driver and conductor were also injured. Locals rushed to the spot after seeing the fire from a distance and helped the injured until emergency services arrived. Ambulances soon shifted the injured to nearby hospitals, where doctors confirmed that most injuries were not life-threatening.
Within minutes, the fire completely engulfed the bus. Luggage, seats, mattresses, and personal belongings were reduced to ashes. By the time fire department personnel managed to control the blaze, the bus had been entirely destroyed, leaving behind only a blackened metal frame.
Miraculously, no deaths were reported, a fact many are calling nothing short of a blessing. Passengers later said that if the fire had broken out while the bus was speeding or if the driver had delayed stopping even by a few minutes, the outcome could have been far worse.
One passenger, still visibly shaken, said, “We thought this was our last night. The smoke was everywhere. People were crying, children were screaming. Somehow, we managed to get out. I don’t know how.”
Another survivor shared that many passengers lost all their belongings, including mobile phones, wallets, clothes, and important documents. For migrant workers and daily wage earners onboard, the loss is especially painful, even though they are grateful to be alive.
Police officials reached the spot soon after and registered a case. Initial investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit in the electrical wiring, though authorities have said a detailed technical inspection will be conducted to confirm the exact cause.
The incident has once again raised serious questions about passenger safety, especially in private buses operating overnight routes. Experts point out that many buses lack proper fire safety equipment, regular maintenance checks, and emergency response training for staff.
Transport department officials have stated that they will inspect the operator’s safety records and check whether the bus had valid fitness certificates and fire extinguishers. Strict action is expected if negligence is found.
This incident also highlights the courage and presence of mind shown by both passengers and the driver. Despite the fear and confusion, quick decisions helped prevent a major tragedy. Emergency exits, though limited, played a crucial role in saving lives.
As daylight broke the next morning, the burnt remains of the bus stood as a grim reminder of how fragile life can be on the road. For the survivors, the journey to Bengaluru may have ended abruptly, but the emotional impact will stay with them for a long time.
While Karnataka has witnessed several road accidents and fire incidents in the past, this latest episode underlines the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety norms, better emergency preparedness, and accountability from private transport operators.
