What’s the role & when was he named ??
On 25 November 2025, when the schedule for the 2026 tournament was unveiled in Mumbai, International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that Rohit Sharma will be its tournament (brand) ambassador for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
The 2026 T20 World Cup will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
The tournament will run from 7 February to 8 March 2026.
Why Rohit was chosen — his credentials & legacy ??
Rohit is a two-time T20 World Cup champion: first as a rising young player in 2007 (the inaugural tournament) and then as captain when India won the 2024 edition.
Across his T20I career, he scored 4,231 runs at an average of ~32.01 and a streak rate of ~140.89 — marking him as one of the format’s most prolific batters.
In the 2024 tournament, he emerged as India’s highest run-getter (257 runs at a strike rate of 156.70), delivering crucial innings — e.g. a blistering 92 off 41 balls in the Super Eights vs Australia, and a vital 57 off 39 balls in the semifinal vs England.
Rohit has featured in every edition of the men’s T20 World Cup so far — highlighting his longevity and deep association with the tournament.
What Rohit (and ICC) said on this appointment ??
Rohit said he felt “privileged” and honoured because, to his knowledge, “no active player has ever been announced as an ICC ambassador.”
He expressed hope that the new Indian team will replicate the “magic” of the 2024 triumph, even if with a different set of players.
The ICC chairman (at the announcement) remarked that there could be “no better representative” for the event than Rohit — a winning captain of 2024 and a veteran of all editions.
